Elon Musk’s views on universal basic income (UBI) and how government should maximize its citizens’ happiness has certainly been echoed by many others in the tech world — UBI, in particular, has been furthered as a possible solution to many industries being made semi-inoperable by lingering COVID fears. Before founding SpaceX and Tesla Motors, Musk was a cofounder of PayPal, so his economic views — no matter how forward thinking they sound today — deserve our attention.

Although UBI would have many possible benefits, Jodie Foster’s character in Elysium-type technocrats could emerge if the process of issuing the new money is not sufficiently decentralized — it shouldn’t be the role of any one person, institution, or family to issue planetary UBI.
